Who We Are

About Homestead Gear Lab

We test the machines that put food by, publish the recorded data, and earn a commission when you buy through our links. That is the whole business model, stated up front.

The mission

Food preservation equipment is expensive, under reviewed, and sold mostly through rewritten product pages. A home freeze dryer is a two to four thousand dollar decision made, too often, on the strength of listing copy and a star count. Homestead Gear Lab exists to replace that with recorded data: identical test batches, weighed and timed, cut open and scored, published with the methodology that produced them.

We started with the categories where the gap is widest: freeze dryers, vacuum sealers, and grain mills, the machines at the heart of a working homestead kitchen. Every category on this site gets the same treatment: a ranked guide, a sortable spec database, a buying framework with no sales links, honest cost math, and troubleshooting that comes from actually maintaining the machines.

The test bench

The bench is led by Rowan Ashford, lead editor and gear tester. Rowan Ashford has spent more than a decade running a five acre homestead in the Appalachian foothills, where food preservation is a weekly habit rather than a hobby. He pressure cans, ferments, dehydrates, and freeze dries roughly fifteen hundred pounds of garden output every year, and he has kept a testing log for every preservation machine on the property. He leads the Homestead Gear Lab test bench and writes every verdict from recorded batch data.

We buy every machine we test at retail price. Nothing on this site is a manufacturer sample, a loaner, or a paid placement, and manufacturers do not see our verdicts before you do.

How we make money

When you click a Check Price link on this site and buy something, we may earn an affiliate commission from the retailer, at no additional cost to you. We are an Amazon Associate, and the required statement appears on every page that carries links.

The commission never changes a verdict. Machines we reject sit in a not recommended section with no buy link at all, because the entire value of this site is that you can trust the no. The full policy, including how we handle scores and updates, is on our editorial standards page.
