The Rules

Editorial Standards

These are the rules every page on this site is written under. They exist because an affiliate site is only worth reading if the incentives never touch the verdicts.

Independence

We buy every product we test at retail price. We accept no samples, no loaners, no sponsored reviews, no consulting arrangements with manufacturers, and no early access in exchange for coverage. Retailers and manufacturers have no input into our verdicts and do not see them before publication.

When a machine fails our testing, it appears in our not recommended sections with no purchase link at all. A review site that only says yes is a storefront, and we would rather lose a commission than publish a recommendation we would not give a friend.

The review process

Every guide follows the same sequence: a published testing protocol, identical inputs across machines, recorded measurements, and a scored verdict with the weighting stated. The full methodology lives on our how we test page and each guide carries the version of it that produced the scores.

Spec data is extracted from manufacturer listings on a stated verification date, and listing contradictions are recorded as contradictions rather than smoothed into false precision. Our own measurements are marked as ours, so you always know whether a number came from a bench or a brochure.

Updates and corrections

Every page carries a visible last verified date, and prices, ratings, and availability are re-checked at each update rather than left to drift. Guides are retested when the competitive field changes materially, when a machine is revised, or when long term ownership data changes our view.

Corrections are published, not patched. When we get a fact wrong, the fix appears on the page with a note explaining what changed. Report errors to hello@homesteadgearlab.com and you will see your correction on the record.

Affiliate links and how they work

This site earns affiliate commissions when readers buy through our links, at no additional cost to the reader. We are an Amazon Associate, and the required disclosure appears on every page that carries links, in the footer sitewide, and in our full affiliate disclosure.

Links are always labeled by the retailer they lead to, marked rel nofollow sponsored, and never cloaked, shortened, or disguised. We link to the specific product page we tested. We do not link to products we reject, and we do not participate in pay per placement, paid rankings, or preferential link programs.

How we use AI tools

We use software tools, including AI assistance, in parts of our workflow the way newsrooms and testing labs do: organizing test logs, drafting from our own recorded data, and maintaining the site's data tables. Every fact in every article traces to a source we verified, a measurement we took, or a listing we extracted on a dated page, and no verdict is generated.

The editorial responsibility for every published word is human. Our testing data, our scores, and our judgments are produced through the documented bench process, and anything we could not verify is labeled as exactly that. If our use of tooling ever changes in a way that touches content, this page changes with it.

Contact and accountability

Questions, disputes, corrections, and bench requests go to hello@homesteadgearlab.com, and we answer. The worklog of what changed and when lives in the pages themselves, through visible updated dates and published corrections.
